Personal Space 2018
Location: Southwest corner beneath the Gardiner Expressway, Bay St. & Lake Shore Blvd W, Toronto, ON
The Personal Space project is a very interesting one, where Environmental Design students at OCAD University are tasked with creating a dwelling for themselves, with the purpose of it being temporary. The caveat to this assignment is that you're restricted to designing a space that can be built with a miniscule crew of people with minor experience. While it may appear to be a mundane rule, this forces students to work on the structure and frame of their building more, as per intended of having a class dedicated to this, namely Structure 1. The temporary space could be permanent, as long as there was a valid reason for the habitat to remain in it's site for more than a year, preferably a few years, but it could not exceed 200 square feet in insulated space. At first I wanted to do something like this, either a refuge and respite spot for passerby's, but after being assigned to build underneath the Gardiner Expressway, I did not want to add to the clutter.
Check out my journal, which documents my design process and iterations in a small booklet.
