reTORNO 2022
Location: Small Arms Inspection Building, 1352 Lakeshore Rd E, Mississauga, ON
reTORNO is proposed as an 8 foot tall Christmas tree, initially proposed with a round platform, also 8 feet in diameter. The reason for this cartoonist replica of a typical Christmas tree is to liken it with what I experience as a child. I’m choosing to cover the tree in sequin fabric, specifically two-toned fabric of varying colours, with the intent that spectators create paths, draw, and play with the installation in any capacity. The tree would be a consistent shade of green on one side, with a surprising pop of colour on the other. This wasn’t chosen for effect only, but also the historical importance that this material carries with it, as it's a large part of Carnaval adornment. Sequin and the practice of stamping metals for ornamentation can be found throughout history in many places such as; Arabic history, Italian history, French, Egyptian, Peruvian, English, Indigenous, Chinese, American, and more.
